5 Things to Avoid When Interviewing for an Automotive Career

Congrats – you’ve made it to the home stretch in your job search, and you’re ready to take the next step in your automotive career. The job interview is a great way to make a lasting impression. But hey, even the pros can hit a few speed bumps along the way. Let’s break down five common slip-ups people make when interviewing at a repair shop, and ways you can avoid them like a pro.

Lack of Preparation:
  • Failing to prepare for the interview is probably the most common mistake. This includes neglecting to research the company, its values, and specific needs. When you arrive unprepared, it shows disinterest or a lack of seriousness about the position. To avoid this, you should thoroughly research the automotive repair shop beforehand. Then, tailor responses during the interview to show you understand their services, customer base, and recent achievements (or challenges). You can use this knowledge to talk about your own skills and experience, and how it aligns with the shop’s needs.
Not Highlighting Relevant Experience:
  • Another mistake is not emphasizing relevant experience during the interview. Automotive repair shops seek candidates with hands-on experience and technical expertise. Failure to highlight relevant skills and accomplishments can actually work against you. Try including specific examples of past projects or challenges tackled. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure responses and provide proven evidence of your abilities.
Overlooking Soft Skills:
  • While technical expertise is where you’ll feel “graded,” soft skills are equally important. Candidates often focus solely on technical abilities during the interview. They won’t think to mention communication, teamwork, and customer service skills. If you want to stand out, emphasize those soft skills and provide examples of how you collaborate with team members or a time you managed conflict resolution with a customer. Demonstrating a well-rounded skill set shows you’re not only technically capable but it also demonstrates your adaptability and excellent customer service.

Failing to Ask Questions:
  • Another popular mistake is not asking questions. This signals a lack of interest or curiosity about the position and the company. Additionally, it limits you. Asking questions is a great way to determine if the repair shop is the right fit for you and your automotive career goals. Come prepared with a list of thoughtful questions to ask the interviewer. Inquire about company culture, growth opportunities, and role expectations.
Lack of Professionalism:
  • Finally, don’t under-estimate your professional presentation. This includes arriving late, dressing inappropriately, or acting disrespectfully (yes, it happens more than you’d think.) Arrive early, dress for the occasion, and keep a positive attitude – no excuses.

Remember, the interview is an opportunity for you both to see if this is a good fit. By avoiding these common mistakes and following best practices, you will increase chances of standing out. Just to recap what we just went over: prepare thoroughly, highlight relevant experience, demonstrate soft skills, and ask thoughtful questions – with professionalism. And, there you go. Now, you’re equipped to crush the interview and land your dream job.
