Automotive technician hiring: frequently asked questions

Straight answers to how this tool works and what the numbers mean, whether you're comparing states or checking your own ZIP code.

What does the competition score mean?

It's a 0 to 100 score showing how much competition employers face for candidates in a market that month. A lower score means more candidates are available relative to open roles. A higher score means employers are competing harder to fill the same roles.

What does seekers per job mean?

It's the average number of active job seekers for every open automotive technician role in that market. More seekers per job generally makes hiring easier. Fewer seekers per job means more competition for the same candidates.

How often is this hiring data updated?

Monthly, at the start of each month. It's a monthly snapshot of hiring activity, not a live real-time feed.

Why does my ZIP code show statewide data instead of local numbers?

When county-level hiring data isn't yet available for a ZIP code, we show statewide numbers in its place so shop owners still get a usable read on their market.

What counts as the most favorable or most challenging month?

The most favorable month on record is the one with the lowest competition score, meaning the least competition for candidates. The most challenging is the one with the highest. The current month is compared against both to show where things stand right now.

Where does this hiring data come from?

It's pulled from hiring activity across 500+ automotive shops Promotive works with, supplemented with labor market data from outside sources.

Can I use this to decide when to post job openings?

Yes. Markets that swing significantly between favorable and challenging months benefit most from timing job postings around the easier stretches. Markets that stay steady month to month are lower-risk to hire in year-round.
